The worst thing about the Cold War was that there were so many "open secrets" no one wanted to talk about and still won't because there were too many survivors. If the US was, ultimately, testing the limits of Soviet power by backing the Saigon regime, very few will acknowledge it openly because it is contrary to the popular narrative.
The past is both simple and complex. One more book you should read: Vonnegut's "Sirens of Titan." Learn how the whole of the human story just might be for one, simple goal.
As for National Free Thought Day, like most of 'em, it's kinda contrived. They still hunt witches in Africa, after all.
Great synopsis. I learned a few things, even though I've lived every minute of it.
I didn't know there was any such thing as National Free Thought Day. I presume our politicians know nothing about it, either.

They still hunt witches here...
The most important thing to remember about witch hunters is that they always find "witches" because only they know what a "witch" is.
