It was common for writers to have their books published in serial form in newspapers. That's how Uncle Tom's Cabin was first published. I have numerous newspapers with serialized works by people I've never heard of.
Perhaps old newspapers are where you'll find some of Byfield's writing.
It's also how Dickens was first published, and hundreds of other 19th Century works, but there's no evidence of that for Byfield. The most likely explanation, based on the title page, is subscription.
